Read on to find out which portable enthusiast compacts are our favorites. If you want a compact camera that produces great quality photos without the hassle of changing lenses, there are plenty of choices available for every budget. The new Wacom One 12 pen display, now in its second generation, offers photographers an affordable option to the mouse or trackpad, making processing images easy and efficient by editing directly on the screen. If that sounds like you, the PhotoSport Outdoor may be a great choice, but as with any hybrid product, there are a few tradeoffs. The LowePro PhotoSport Outdoor is a camera pack for photographers who also need a well-designed daypack for hiking and other outdoor use. As we discovered, to shoot with it is to embrace the unexpected, from strange color shifts to odd textures and oversized grain. Lomography's LomoChrome '92 is designed to mimic the look of classic drugstore film that used to fill family photo albums. I'm not sure if there's any justification for someone who uses Lightroom primarily, but the speed and responsiveness of it make an interesting alternative. If you're a Photos user it makes a really superb companion. I would like to see automatic lens correction, and maybe some finer control over things like sharpening, but again, it's only $19.99. But more than that, it's really, really good. At only $19.99 you can't really complain given the features. Overall, it's a fantastic photo editor for the price. At least I think so, but I don't now enough about it to be 100% certain. There also seems to be some calibration issues between Photos and edit extensions, but again, this is a problem with the photos architecture and not the extension. This was supposed to be a feature of Photos extensions, but it seems to be the way most work, so I'm guessing there's a limitation in the architecture. Once you save back to photos, you can't re-edit it and pick up where you left off. The only real problem is that it's destructive. It's not ideal from a workflow perspective, but it's not terrible either. This one gives Photos some serious power. I was a bit skeptical when the editing extensions first came out, as the take up on the iOS counterpart was never great, but so far there are some great extensions out there. If you're using photos, I can't recommend this enough. As always though, you need to make sure you haven't done any edits on it first, or it will send a flattened Jpeg version. If you send it a raw file, it will open the raw file and use it's own conversion. When using as an edit extension for Photos, it really expands the capabilities of Apple's Photos editor, and addresses a lot of its limitations. It even has a dehaze adjustment, as well as a nice feature called "diffuse" which adds some diffuse light back into your image. It features adjustments for pretty much everything you can think of, including all the standard exposure, shadow and highlights adjustments, as well as clarity, sharpen and denoise. The controls themselves actually look very similar to the controls in Apple's photos, with the same kind of sliders. It works as an extension for Apple's Photos app. While I probably wouldn't suggest using it instead of Lightroom, it does have one other cool trick up its sleeve. That difference comes down to the clean interface, and the fact that it's really fast. However, while it might look the same and have similar functions, it's actually a much different experience when you're using it. It has many of the same functions, and works with both RAW and JPEG images. It's available for Windows too, but in this short first look, I'm only talking about the mac version (as that's all I've used)īasically Polarr Photo Editor is a photo editing application that is somewhat like the develop module in Lightroom. It's called Polarr Photo editor, and it's just $19.99. I finally got around to trying it the other day, and I'm really impressed by the application. I'd seen it come up in the suggestions a few times and I'd even bookmarked it to come back to and have a look at later. I came across an interesting photo editing app in the Mac app store the other day.
